Water and particulate contamination of hydraulic and lubricating fluids stored in open reservoirs is well known. Water contamination related problems include corrosive and accelerated abrasive wear, loss of oil film, additive precipitation, bearing fatigue, oil oxidation with resultant acidity increase and viscosity changes.

Des-Case hygroscopic breathers attack the cause of oil contamination, not the result. The breather combines a unique, patented, high efficiency air filter and a water vapor removal system. The hygroscopic agent, silica gel, changes color (from blue to pink) to indicate saturation and when replacement is necessary. Des-Case provides a number of adapter designs that make it easy to mount the breather on new and existing reservoirs.

As the moist, dirty air is drawn through the unit, the moisture is extracted by the drying agent, and the filter removes particulate. Clean, dry air enters the reservoir. The Des-Case unit has a color indicator that signals the need to recharge or replace the unit.
